Visualize This 2018 Challenge: New prize & data visualization webinar announced

A Dell 43" 4K multi-client monitor has been added to the 2018 Visualize This! Challenge prize list thanks to a generous donation from Dell EMC. With entries due by November 30, the Challenge is in its homestretch and to date has registrants from coast to coast in a range of backgrounds including:

  • Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Biological Sciences
  • Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences

The Visualize This! Challenge is a Canada-wide competition co-hosted by WestGrid and Compute Canada that aims to celebrate the innovative ways visualization can help researchers explore datasets and answer important scientific questions.

Two contributed datasets are provided -- one is a molecular dynamics dataset and the other is a humanities textbase from The Orlando Project. Participants have until November 30 to transform one of the datasets into a 3D data visualization using an open-source solution of their choice. Participants do not need to have a background in the dataset's subject matter -- researchers from all disciplines are invited to register. Entries are judged based on their interactivity, ability to capture the 3D nature of the data, and their clear innovative display of multiple variables.

Data Visualization Webinar / Tutorial:

Anyone interested in the Visualize This! Challenge, or data visualization in general, is invited to attend an upcoming webinar that will explore yt, a python package for analyzing multi-resolution volumetric and particle data. Alex Razoumov, lead organizer of the Visualize This! Challenge, will share an introductory overview of yt and demonstrate how it can be used for analysis & visualization of volumetric data. He will wrap up the session with a Visualize This! Challenge Q&A, for anyone interested in participating or anyone currently working on a solution who has questions about the datasets or their entry.
