Award-winning TRIUMF graduate student prepares for LHC ‘glow up’

WestGrid user Sébastien Rettie was showcased in a TRIUMF article for his current work on detector technology for ATLAS, one of the major particle detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). His work on the multilayered detector system (the New Muon Small Wheels [NSWs] system) will in part allow ATLAS to cope with proposed increases in data. Read the full article here.

AI For Social Good: Addressing the need for women in tech

Compute Canada user Doina Precup was featured in a McGill Tribune article for her efforts to increase gender diversity in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Precup is one of the organizers for a program called AI for Social Good Lab. The six-week lab, which was held, in part, at McGill University, was initiated by the OSMO Foundation, McGill’s Reasoning and Learning Lab (RLLAB), and the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) and co-organized with DeepMind. This year, the program enabled 30 women the ability to apply the use of AI to build apps and other projects that addressed current social issues. Read the full article here.

Young Innovators: U of S launches device into near-space to track climate change

WestGrid user Adam Bourassa was featured in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix for his work with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to develop a particle-imaging device that will help researchers study the cooling effects of aerosol particles on a warming climate. Since 2013, Bourassa and his team have been refining and improving the design of a high-resolution imaging device called ALI (Aerosol Limb Imager) that can help study aerosols in the stratosphere, the upper part of the atmosphere. The device was launched at the CSA’s Timmins, ON base as part of the agency’s STRATOS program and as a testing demonstration to determine if it can eventually be used to collect aerosol measurements in space. Canadian laser breakthrough has physicists close to cooling down antimatter

TRIUMF - August 22, 2018

WestGrid user Takamasa Momose and his team were featured in a TRIUMF article for their observation of a benchmark atomic energy transition in antihydrogen. The so-called Lyman-alpha transition, first seen in hydrogen more than 100 years ago, is measured as a series of ultraviolet emissions when a hydrogen atom’s electron is prompted to shift from a low orbital to a high orbital. Using laser pulses lasting nanoseconds, Momose, Fujiwara, Canadian colleagues, and the international ALPHA collaboration at CERN, were able to achieve the same transition in several hundred antihydrogen atoms magnetically trapped in a vacuum. New Canadian Radio Telescope is Detecting Fast Radio Bursts

One of Compute Canada's major user groups, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) team, was featured in Universe Today for its work with fast radio bursts (FRBs). The CHIME radio telescope, located at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) in British Columbia, made its first-ever detection of an FRB, an event know as FRB 180725A.
