Science magazine has ranked the breakthrough of solving checkers as tenth on its list of the 10 greatest scientific discoveries in 2007. The computational effort behind solving the game of checkers, led by University of Alberta professor Jonathan Schaeffer, took 18 years to complete and used WestGrid computing resources in several roles of the process.

    The WestGrid Resource Allocation Committee (RAC) is now accepting applications for 2007-08. The WestGrid RAC asks that users that need more than the default allocation of WestGrid resources submit a proposal stating their requirements. The RAC will evaluate the proposals in the context of the overall usage of the facilities and make a number of select "special" allocations.
