Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Technology) at the UofA

Jonathan Schaeffer, one of WestGrid’s Principal Investigators, has accepted the position of Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President (Information Technology) at the University of Alberta (UofA), effective July 1, 2008.


Schaeffer is a Professor and Chair of Computing Science at the UofA, a Canada Research Chair and an iCORE Chair. His research interests are artificial intelligence and parallel/distributed computing. In the past year, Schaeffer and his research team created the first program to win a human world championship in any game of checkers, which Science magazine has ranked tenth on its list of the 10 greatest scientific discoveries in 2007. He is also known for his work as a co-founder of BioTools (bioinformatics software). He has been instrumental in establishing the UofA as a world leader in artificial intelligence research.
