Commercial Software Request Form

Introduction

WestGrid requests input regarding software purchases to accompany major hardware upgrades that are being undertaken in 2009 and beyond. If you are a current WestGrid account holder or plan to use WestGrid in the next year, we invite you to fill out the following form to indicate what commercial software would be of benefit to your research if installed on the new WestGrid systems. This request applies only to software for systems funded in part by the Canada Foundation for Innovation National Platforms Fund, currently including the Silo storage facility and major Linux clusters Bugaboo, Checkers and Orcinus.

Note that fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be filled in for your request form to be accepted.

Please enter your name and email address.  We may need to contact you for clarification of your software requirements.

To avoid duplication of effort, a principal investigator of a WestGrid project or his or her designate may submit a request form on behalf of the whole project.  If your situation is more complicated please choose "Other" and explain in the space provided (for example, if a project has sub-groups, it may make more sense to have each sub-group respond).

 

Instructions for the remainder of the form

Complete a separate software request section below for each separate commercial software package you are requesting.  If requesting more than one package, expand the corresponding section by clicking on "Software request 2" or "Software request 3".  If more than three packages are required, use the comments section at the end of the form to describe the extra packages.

 

Software request 1
If there might be some ambiguity about which software package you require, please clarify by including a web page of a company that sells it or other identifying information.  If you need a specific version or optional components of the software, mention those as well.  If there is an alternate package that could be used for your work, mention that, with a ranking if possible (for example "MATLAB, Mathematica or Maple, with MATLAB preferred ).  If you are not sure about what specific commerical software could be used state the requirements (non-linear optimization library callable from C++) and we can have a follow-up discussion after investigating the possibilities. If you know whether you will be using a serial, shared-memory parallel or distributed parallel version of the software, that is also useful information to include.
If you choose the "Other" option, please clarify the role of the software in your research project, using the space provided below.  Also feel free to elaborate if you have chosen one of the other options.
If relevant for the type of licensing required for the software, indicate the maximum number of simultaneous jobs you expect to run.
If you are submitting the request on behalf of a group of researchers, enter an estimate of the number of group members who will use the software in the next twelve months.

 

 

 

If you have requested more than one software package, please indicate the relative importance of the software.  If you (or your group, if the request is being made on behalf of a group) had a certain software budget allocation, indicate the percentage of the allocation that should be spent on each software package requested.
