Visit Compute Canada at SC11 - Nov 14-17
The Sumpercomputing 2011 (SC11) conference exhibiton is on now and runs until November 17. Taking place in Seattle, WA, the conference continues a long and successful tradition of engaging the international community in HPC, networking, storage and analysis. SC11 places an emphasis on bringing together communities to facilitate information exchange, discussions and new collaborations for research and education related to innovating high performance computing applications and advancing scientific discovery and scholarship.
Compute Canada is proud to be participating in SC11. Stop by the Compute Canada exhibit to learn more about its platform of HPC resources at its seven partner consortia, including WestGrid's. Don't forget to ask about the IQ station, WestGrid's newest visualization tool!
SAVE THE DATE: Compute Canada and BCNET's HPCS, May 1-3, 2012
This spring, WestGrid and Compute Canada will be hosting HPCS 2012 as a joint conference with BCNET. On May 1-3, 2012, the conference, themed Connect. Compute. Collaborate, will focus on advancing higher education and research by promoting innovative and smart ways to use and share information technology.
Compute Canada will bring together Canada's HPC community in Vancouver for their annual High Performance Computing Symposium (HPCS). HPCS is a multidisciplinary conference that focuses on research involving High Performance Computing and its application.
Attended by Canadian and international experts and renowned researchers in the sciences, all areas of engineering, the applied sciences, medicine and life sciences, mathematics, the humanities and social sciences, it is Canada’s pre-eminent forum for HPC. The three-day conference will be held at Simon Fraser University Harbour Centre in Vancouver, B.C.
The website will go live the first week of January. In the meantime, follow us on twitter @BCNET_HPCS12.

NEPTUNE Canada is Hiring
NEPTUNE Canada is hiring co-op students or casual workers to join their busy workplace starting this winter. NEPTUNE Canada is the world’s first regional cabled ocean observatory. Situated on the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate off British Columbia, it is a natural laboratory for studies on ocean change, plate tectonics, geochemistry of the ocean crust, deep sea ecosystems, and ocean engineering. NEPTUNE uses WestGrid/Compute Canada systems to transfer and store research data.

HPCVL and Compute Canada Workshops to Start Oct 31
This fall, HPCVL and Compute Canada are hosting a series of workshops on Parallel Programming Using OpenMP and MPI. The workshops are directed at scientists and engineers who are interested in learning more about running code on parallel computers, ranging from small multi-core machines to large clusters. The course covers both shared-memory approaches using the OpenMP compiler directives, and distributed-memory frameworks using the Message-Passing Interface MPI.
This workshop will be held twice in Ottawa and in Kingston. Participants can also join via video conference.

Compute Canada National Resource Allocation Proposals Due Tomorrow (Oct 18)
Principal Investigators at Canadian academic institutions who require access to HPC resources on Compute Canada systems are asked to submit proposals to Compute Canada by Tuesday, October 18 at 3:00 pm Eastern. The proposals will request allocations of CPU time and storage. In addition to offering access to computing resources with an aggregate peak of well over 1 PetaFlops of compute power and more than 5 Petabytes of storage, Compute Canada offers applications-enabling assistance from HPC experts at the regional consortia.
Allocations will be valid for one year, beginning January 2012. Under exceptional circumstances, and for long term national and international projects, an extended timeframe may be granted. Allocations of longer than one year will be subject to NRAC (National Resource Allocation Committee) approval and will require the submission of an annual progress report.
